TURLOCK, Calif. – Luisa Musika (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS) captured the discus throw title with a 2010 NCAA Division II qualifying mark on Saturday as the San Francisco State women’s track and field squad kicked off its outdoor schedule at the inaugural Kim Duyst Invitational at Al Brenda Track on the campus of Cal State Stanislaus.
Musika posted a winning hurl of 142 feet, 7 inches in the discus and finished second in the shot put with a toss of 43-3.25. The 2009 All-American also took fifth in the hammer throw (140-09) behind teammate Cassie Freeman (Morro Bay, Calif., Cuesta JC), who wound up in third with a distance of 142-08 in her Gator debut.
Tyler Dalbey won the 400 hurdles and ran the third leg of SF State's victorious 4x400 relay on Saturday.
Additionally, SF State received a first-place finish from the quartet of Samantha Eggert (Lincoln, Calif., Del Oro HS), Stefeny Butler (San Jose, Calif., Mt. Pleasant HS), Tyler Dalbey (Petaluma, Calif., Santa Rosa JC) and Carrie Thomas (Milpitas, Calif., Milpitas HS), who combined to capture the 4x400 relay with a time of 3 minutes, 56.10 seconds, the school’s fastest clocking since 2007. Dalbey, meanwhile, was triumphant in the 400-meter hurdles, besting the field with a time of 1:04.89.
“This was a fantastic meet for us,” said Gator head coach Terry Burke. “The facility is outstanding and we were able to compete under ideal conditions. The girls have really prepared themselves well for the outdoor season over the past few weeks, and I believe our performance today should be a good indicator of the type of team we’ll have in 2010.”
Besides running the anchor leg of the victorious 4x400 relay, Thomas won her heat in the 100 meters with a time of 12.60, finishing third overall, while placing second in the 200 with a 25.66 clocking. The Fremont, Calif., native also combined with Brittany Johnson (Marina, Calif., Monte Vista Christian HS), Eggert and Butler in SF State’s third-place 4x100 relay team, which crossed the finish line in 48.87. Johnson, meanwhile, took fourth overall in the 100 with a time of 12.73.
Other Gators to record third-place finishes on Saturday included Meagen Moiola (Morro Bay, Calif., Morro Bay HS) (high jump, 5-03.75), Ashley Crittendon (San Francisco, Calif., College of San Mateo) (triple jump, 34-01.50), and Lindsay Machado (Placerville, Calif., El Dorado HS) (javelin, 108-09).
Carrie Thomas ran the anchor leg of the Gators' winning 4x400 relay team and finished second and third in the 200 and 100, respectively.
Machado also landed in the runner-up position in the discus, finishing in back of Musika with a distance of 131-06.
SF State had a trio of top-10 placers in middle distance and distance events as well. Kelsey Feeley (Palo Alto, Calif., Henry M. Gunn HS) (2:24.84) took 10th in the 800, while Karen Marchan (Laguna Hills, Calif., Laguna Hills HS) (19:06.73) and Claire Fleming (Trabuco Hills, Calif., Orange Coast College) (19:16.33) ended up ninth and 10th, respectively, in the 5000.
As a team, the Gators finished third among California Collegiate Athletic Association teams with 128 points, while Chico State (205 pts.) and Cal Poly Pomona (169 pts.) took the top two spots. Host school Cal State Stanislaus was fourth with 105 points.
SF State will be back in action on Friday, March 20, when it competes in the UC Davis Classic.
