GOLDEN, Colo. — The San Francisco State men's wrestling team saw its season end at the 2017 NCAA Super Region 4 Wrestling Championships on Friday.
The loss broke a streak dating back to the 1964-65 season that has seen the Gators send at least one grappler to NCAA Nationals.
At 125 lbs.,
Matt Gamble, who earlier in the week was named All-RMAC Second Team, won his first bout with a 12-2 major decision over Ouachita Baptist's Weston Cronan. Gamble broke a sudden overtime decision, 5-3, in his next match, to Adam State's Darek Huff. Gamble faced Matthew Lavengood of host Colorado Mines but saw his bid at nationals come to an end with a fall at 2:22.
In the 133-lb. bracket,
Nathan Cervantez won his opening round by 9-1 by major decision over Ouachita Baptist's Tyson Hume. Cervantez was next paired against Nebraska-Kearney's Bryce Shoemaker, the No. 3-ranked 133-lb. wrestler in NCAA Division II. Cervantez battled but dropped a close 8-6 decision. In the consolation bracket, Cervantez dropped another close decision, 9-6, this time to Western State's Trenton Piatt.
Josh Villaflor lost both of his 141-lb. matches. Nebraska-Kearney's Jacob Wasser, the No. 11 ranked wrestler in his weight class, scored a fall at 2:31. In his consolation match, Villaflor also suffered a fall at 4:09 to Western State Colorado's Seth Rich.
Dylan Furtado dropped two of his three 149-lb. matches. Furtado suffered a fall at 1:38 to Jacob Gerken of Mines. Furtado topped Adam State's Devin Vasquez with a fall at 3:32 but lost a 7-3 decision to Chadron State's Sean Glasgow.
In the 157-lb. weight class,
Trevor Perez bounced back from an 11-2 major decision loss to New Mexico Highlands' Reis Humphrey with a 15-6 major decision of his own over Simon Fraser's Tanner Spray. However, Perez fell by a 7-2 decision to Colorado Mines' Ethan Ruby.
Tyson Kuahine, the Gators' other RMAC All-Second Team selection at 165 lb., dropped his opening bout by a 16-5 major decision to Ouachita Baptist's Tyler Mann. The senior received a bye then recorded a narrow 3-2 decision over Western State's Travis Bradford. Kuahine saw his college career come to an end with a 4-1 decision to California Baptist's Christian Smith.
Jesse Lyga dropped both of his 174 lb. bouts. The senior fell by technical fall to Chadron State's Chance Helmick, then suffered a fall to Newman's Kyle Ryan.
At 184 lb.,
Mitchell Owens suffered a technical fall to Nebraska-Kearney's Zach Stodden. Owens received a consolation bye but fell in his next bout by a 9-0 major decision to Adams State's Richard Bencomo.
Johnathon Costa earned a 17-5 major decision in his opening 197-lb. bout, but fell by technical fall to the country's top 197-lb. wrestler, Jacob Waste of California Baptist. Costa fell by sudden victory to Colorado Mesa's Jareb Aziz.
