Gators Sports Hall of Fall Welcomes 2013 Class

SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco State Department of Athletics formally introduced the 2013 Gator Sports Hall of Fame class at a reception and dinner ceremony last Saturday in the Seven Hills Conference Center on the SF State campus.

The four newest Gator Hall of Famers include Fred Glosser (baseball- 1961), Scott Osterholt (wrestling-1979), Joe Panella (baseball- 1962) and Vanessa Rodrigue (softball- 2007).
 
Director of Athletics Dr. Michael J. Simpson welcomed the gathering of Gator alumni, family and friends, while spirit coordinator Jamil Sheared served as master of ceremonies. In addition, current SF State softball head coach Cristina Byrne and former baseball head coach and Gator Hall of Fame member Tom Morgan took the podium as featured presenters, along with Dr. Simpson as well as SF State Vice President for Development and Institutional Advancement Robert Nava. 
 
The Gator Sports Hall of Fame inducted its first members in 1975 and has annually honored a new group of legends since then. Including this year's class, a total of 267 individuals have been enshrined since the Hall of Fame's inception.

Below is a quick look at the newest Gator Hall of Fame inductees:
 
Fred Glosser---Baseball (1958-61)---was  pitcher/first baseman for the SF State baseball team from 1958 to 1961, finishing with a 15-3 record during 1960-61.  During his Gator career, Glosser boasted a 1.27 ERA from the mound.
 
In the 1961 season, Glosser helped the Gators become the Far West Conference Champions while earning All-Far West Conference honors, including Conference Player of the Year.  He also earned All-American honors during the season.
 
After his collegiate career, Glosser began coaching in 1961 in Aptos Junior High School in San Francisco in 1961 and also has coached at the high school and collegiate levels.  He refereed football for high school and college competitions and was a member fo the NFL Instant Replay from 1999 to 2001.
 
Scott Osterholt—Wrestling (1977-79)---wrestled for SF State from 1977 to 1979, proving to be a force to be reckoned with.
 
In 1979, the 177-pound wrestler claimed the Far West Conference Championship along with a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II West Region Championship in the same year.  With the wins, Osterholt went on to make his first national appearance and concluding the season, he earned All-Far West Conference honors.
 
After his collegiate wrestling days on the mat, Osterholt went on to compete in the US Olympic Trials as a Greg Roman wrestler and was a three-time National Place Winner in 1986, 1988 and 1989.  In 1988, Osterholt earned a place on the US National Wrestling Team.
 
Osterholt went on to work at Alhambra High School as an educator for 23 years and head varsity wrestling coach from 1985-2000.  During his tenure, Osterholt coached the 1997-98 Diablo Football Athletic League Championship team, two state qualifiers, six North Coast Section place winners--- including NCS Sean Folwer in 1994—and three league champions.

Joe Panella---Baseball (1961-62)---playing in the outfield for the Gators from 1961 to 1962.  His first year as a Gator, Panella ended the season with a .456 batting average---which topped the SF State record book until 1989.  (He also held the record for triples with 5 until 1979).
 
Panella helped guide the Gators to back-to-back Far Western Conference Championships, earning First Team All-Conference recognition both years and the FWC Player of the Year Award in 1962.  He was named the Team MVP and SF Examiner both seasons and received All-American status.
 
Post-college playing days, Panella played in the Houston Astros (then the Houston Colt 45's) organization for five years before beginning his coaching career in 1969 in the Oakland Unified School District.  He has coached club teams along with high school and college teams.
 
Vanessa Rodrigue---Softball (2004-07)---was a key member of the 2004-07 SF State softball teams at second base for the Gators, helping the Gators claim a West Region title and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Div. II Championships, along with fellow Hall of Fame member Sonja Garnett.
 
Rodrigue collected numerous awards in her seasons as a Gator including being named to the All-West Region, All-West Region Tournament (2004, 2005). DII Championship Tournament (2005) and All-CCAA (2004, 2005, 2007) teams.  She was also named to the CCAA Academic team in 2006 and was named an National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-American in 2005.
 
Over her collegiate career, Rodrigue established record-holding numbers and currently sits in the top 10 of multiple categories in the record book. Her 251 career games played puts in first, along with career hits (and hits in a season-2004), at bats in a season-2007, and career doubles.
