ROCKLIN, Calif. --- The SF State Gators won their 2013-14 season opener this evening with a 77-57 win over the William Jessup Warriors at the WJU Activities Center in Rocklin, Calif. The Gators held the Warriors to just 32% shooting from the field including 30% from three's. SF State scored 29 of their points off of the Warriors' 23 turnovers.
"It feels great to get that first 'w' of the season, it was a good test for us on the road against a good William Jessup team," said SF State head coach Paul Trevor. "I am proud of our guys as they played hard this evening."
Will Overton, Jr. paced the Gators with a career high 26 points. The Gator senior was 9 of 13 from the field including connecting on five of his seven attempts from beyond the arc. He also made three of his five attempts from the charity stripe.
Two-time All-Conference performer Nefi Perdomo added 18 points for the Gators, who shot 48% from the field.
Keith Newman paced the Warriors (3-3) with 12 points.
"Our seniors led us this evening led by Nefi (Perdomo) and Will (Overton, Jr.)," added Trevor. "We continue to get better with each and every day."
SF State jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first three minutes and the visitors increased their lead to 17-6 on a Max Fodor jumper at the 14:32 mark of the first half.
The Warriors cut their deficit to 17-10 in the next three minutes, but SF State went on a 5-0 capped by a Calvin Otiono three to increase its lead back to double digits (22-10).
Once again, the hosts cut the Gator lead to 22-13 on a Justin Donner three, but the guests went on a 7-3 run to take a 29-16 lead and never relinquished their double digit lead.
Nefi Perdomo's jumper with a little over 90 seconds left in the first half gave the Gators a 38-23 lead heading into the locker room.
Udun Osakue's three capped a 17-2 run to open up the second half as the Gators increased their lead to 55-28, their largest of the game in the first seven minutes of the new stanza.
Three times in the next eight minutes the Warriors cut the deficit to 15 including the last time on a Downer three with 5:22 to go in the game. This was the closest, 65-50, William Jessup would get as the Gators cruised to a 77-57 non-conference win over their Cal Pac opponent.
SF State also had 25 assists on its 29 baskets including a career high 8 by Perdomo and 7 by Bren Haley. Perdomo and Haley also each recorded four of the Gators' 14 steals. The visitors only had 14 turnovers including five in the first half.
The Gators will return to the court on Nov. 29 and 30 in Chico, Calif., as they will participate in the Carl's Jr. Mac Martin Invitational on the campus of Chico State. SF State will face #9 Seattle Pacific in the first game of the invitational on Nov. 29 at 5:30 pm. The next night, SF State will take on Bay Area rival Dominican University of California. Tip-off for that game is also 5:30pm.
SF State will have its home opener on Friday, December 6 at 7:30pm, when they take on CCAA foe Chico State.
