SEASIDE, Calif. – Fresh off its earlier win against Maryville, the San Francisco State women's volleyball team kept the momentum going with an uplifting three-set triumph (25-20, 25-14, 25-20) over Alaska Anchorage in the second match of the Otter Classic Friday at Cal State Monterey Bay.
For the second straight outing,
Kelly Ostello led the charge with 11 kills, helping the Gators improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Seawolves dip to 0-2 after falling to Minnesota State in the morning.
Also aiding the SF State cause was
Meagan Wright, who contributed six kills, three block assists and two service aces, while
Iris Tolenada and
Jessica Nicerio added 22 assists and 12 digs, respectively.
The Gators limited UAA to a paltry .010 hitting percentage and were the beneficiaries of nine errant Seawolf serves. In addition, the Purple and Gold maintained a 34-26 advantage in kills, a 39-30 edge in digs and a 6.5-3.0 spread in total blocks.
The two teams battled through a nip-and-tuck opening frame, combining for 10 ties and six lead changes. Trailing 20-19, a kill by Ostello followed by five consecutive UAA attack errors gave SF State the set.
Buoyed by their good fortune, the Gator offense rose to the occasion in the second stanza, hitting at a .400 clip on 11 kills in 25 attempts with just one error.
SF State also jumped out to a big lead at 17-10 in the third frame until back-to-back aces by Lindsey Logan inched the Seawolves to within 20-19. However, a kill by junior
Katie Judd snuffed the momentum as UAA committed three additional attack errors down the stretch.
The Seawolves were paced by Julia Mackey's 11 kills, while Jordan Bush and Siobhan Johansen finished with 10 digs apiece in the loss.
The Gators return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 4, when they tackle Seattle Pacific in their 2012 home opener beginning at 7 p.m.
