ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – San Francisco State's
Meagen Moiola (high jump),
Luisa Musika (weight throw) and
Tiana Wills (high jump) all achieved NCAA Division II indoor provisional qualifying marks on Friday to lead the Gator women's track and field squad during the opening slate of events at the New Mexico Classic inside the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Moiola established a new SF State indoor record in the high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 8 inches to place fifth overall. Similarly, Wills set a provisional qualifying mark in the same event with a ninth-place height of 5-06, which ranks second in school history.
“This is what Meagen has been capable of for long time,” said Gator head coach Terry Burke. “Today she showed a lot of poise and confidence clearing two heights of 5-06 and 5-08 in just one attempt.
“Tiana had a great clearance of 5-06 and is coming back into form after being away from training and competition for a year. She has the ability to jump much higher in our upcoming meets.”
Musika, meanwhile, finished fifth in the weight throw with a personal-long distance of 57 feet, 3 inches, bettering her previous best of 53-07.75 attained just last year at the University of Washington's Husky Classic. Two weeks ago at the same venue during the Cherry and Silver Invitational, the SF State two-time outdoor All-American broke her own school record in the shot put with a DII provisional qualifying toss of 45-09.
“Luisa has been battling illness and injuries and isn't close to being 100 percent,” Burke said. “This performance truly represents what a great competitor she is”
In addition to Musika's effort, which ranks second on the Gators' all-time indoor performance list,
Deirdra Bridgett climbed into third place on the school's charts in the weight throw as well with a career-best mark of 52-03.25, finishing second in her flight and eighth overall.
“Deirdra had a massive PR today,” Burke said. “Her improvement is a testimony to her hard work, along with the guidance and instruction of assistant coach Christina McKinstry.”
In the lone running event for the Purple and Gold,
Maya Cabiness won her heat and finished 19
th overall in the 200 meters with a personal-fast time of 25.52 seconds, which moves her into fifth place in school indoor history. Joining Cabiness in the event were
Carrie Thomas (18
th – 25.50) and
Brionne Baucham (20
th – 25.56).
