Gators and Vikings Play To A Scoreless Tie

Annicia Jones Recorded Her 7th Career Shutout and First of The Season In the Gators' Opener Against WWU
CHICO, Calif.---  In the SF State's women's soccer team's regular season opener, it was the Gators playing to a double overtime scoreless tie with the Western Washington University Vikings (1-0-1) at Chico State's University Field.  The Gators had a couple of chances late in regulation to win the game, but could not put the ball in the goal.  SF State will have its home opener this Monday at noon at Cox Stadium, when the Gators host Central Washington in another early season important regional match-up.

"It was a good result for us today as we battled the whole 110 minutes," said SF State Head Coach Jack Hyde.  "It was a little disappointing that we had 3 or 4 clear cut chances in the second half to put the ball away but did not," added Hyde.  "The decision making in front of the net was not great, but it is something that we can fix in practice."

The Gators were out-shot by the Vikings 17-12, but outshot their opponents 9-1 in the second half.  Early in the second half, Myriah Johnson (Lakewood, Washington, Clover Park)chipped a shot over the goalkeeper that skimmed over the top of the crossbar.  Then with 12:35 left in regulation, Nicole Vanni (Manteca, California, Sierra ) shot hit the crossbar and in the final minutes, Johnson had another chance but went a few inches wide past of the far post.

Western Washington's best chances came in the overtime but the Gators' Annicia Jones (Sacramento, California, West Campus) and SF State's defenders stopped the ball from going into the net twice (once each in each overtime period).

Jones finished with four saves in goal for the Gators while Jamie Arthurs had five in goal for the Vikings, who defeated Chico State 2-1 in overtime this past Thursday.
