WALNUT CREEK---- As announced by the California College Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), SF State junior guard Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College)has been named the 2009-10 Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Year as voted on by the 12 league head coaches. Hoskins also was selected to the First Team All-CCAA.
Hoskins leads way for the Gators with his 14.2 scoring and 5.5 rebounding average along with his 132 assists and 50 steals. The junior guard was named three-times the Wilson/CCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week and was the only recipient to earn this honor three times this season. He also shot 47% from the field and 70% from the charity stripe while starting in all 30 games for the Gators.
Earlier this season, he was named the 2009 Adams State Bankers Classic Most Valuable Player. He recorded his first double-double of his career as a Gator scoring 14 points and grabbing a season high 15 rebounds in SF State's 68-66 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on February 10.
He also has season highs of 26 points versus Cal State San Bernardino (January 23, 2010), 9 assists at Sonoma State (February 6, 2010), three three-point field goals made (twice) and seven steals at Cal State LA (January 9, 2010). Hoskins is the first Gator men's basketball player to be named the CCAA's Newcomer of the Year.
In the CCAA statistics report that was released earlier this week, Hoskins is second in steals, third in assists, fifth in scoring, 8th in assist/turnover ratio, 11th in rebounding, and 14th in field goal percentage. The Beloit, Wisconsin, native is currently tied for 5th with 132 assists and tied for 9th with 50 steals on the Gators' single season lists.
Hoskins played a key role in the Gators' third straight CCAA Men's Basketball Championship appearance this evening. SF State finished the regular season with a 17-13 overall record and a 10-12 record in the CCAA. The Gators finished in sixth place and will travel to third-place Cal State San Bernardino for their first round game this evening with a scheduled tip-off of 7pm.
Humboldt State's Zac Tiedeman was named the CCAA's Most Valuable Player while Davion Berry of Cal State Monterey Bay was named the conference's Freshman of the Year. Cal Poly Pomona's Greg Kamansky was named the CCAA Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.
