NEW ORLEANS – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named San Francisco State harriers Brittany Garrett (Hoover, Ala., Spain Park HS, Univ. of Southern Mississippi)and Brian Trejo (Glendale, Calif., Hoover HS) to its Division II All-Academic teams this week for their efforts in the classroom and on the course. Garrett, a senior kinesiology major, was one of 286 student-athletes selected to the women’s team, while Trejo, a freshman majoring in journalism, was chosen among 152 runners to represent the men’s squad.
To qualify for All-Academic honors, a student-athlete must have completed at least 12 semester/quarter hours through the semester of competition at the institution to be eligible. The student-athlete must have at least a 3.25 cumulative grade point average and have placed in the top 30 percent of the total number of athletes eligible to compete at the respective regional championships or have placed in the top 50 percent of the field at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.
Garrett competed in four races in 2009 and was the top Gator women’s finisher at the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships in Golden Gate Park, placing 34th among 161 competitors with a season-fast time of 22 minutes, 48.6 seconds, which ranks third on the school’s all-time 6K list. She was also the lone SF State runner at the Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif., finishing second in the women’s open division with a 5K clocking of 18:59.
Trejo, meanwhile, was the top SF State men’s runner in three out of six meets, including a 25th-place effort in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championships at Humboldt State where he crossed the finish line with an 8K time of 26:41.90. Trejo also posted an 8K season-best of 26:40.70 en route to 33rd-place standing at the SF State Invitational and logged a 10K clocking of 33.40.20 to finish 48th out of 131 runners at the West Regional Championships.
SF State concluded the 2009 campaign at the regional meet with the men’s squad placing 11th out of 20 schools, while the women finished 13th out of 25 teams.
Select distance runners will be on display when the Gator track and field team hosts two home meets this spring, the SF State Distance Carnival (March 26) and the Johnny Mathis Invitational (April 2-3).
