WALNUT CREEK--- For the third time this season, SF State point guard
Marquel Hoskins (Beloit, Wisconsin, Reedley College) was named the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 18-24 as announced by the conference office this afternoon. Hoskins had a solid week as helped the Gators to a split of Cal Poly Pomona and conference-leading Cal State San Bernardino.
The Beloit, Wisconsin, native averaged 20.5 points and 5.0 rebounds per game during the Gators’ 1-1 weekend while shooting 44.8% from the field and 33% from three-point land. He also connected on 86.7% of his attempts from the charity stripe. The junior guard averaged 5.5 assists and 3.0 steals also SF State, who is now 13-6 overall and 6-5 in the CCAA.
During a 63-60 loss to CCAA preseason favorite Cal Poly Pomona, Hoskins scored 15 points, grabbed three rebounds, dished out six assists and had one steal. He then scored a season-high 26 points, tallied five assists and five steals in SF State’s 67-61 upset victory over Cal State San Bernardino.
Hoskins was 9-for-9 from the foul line and scored seven of the Gators’ final 12 points, including the go-head basket with 2:13 remaining, against the Coyotes.
For the season, Hoskins leads the Gators with his 14.7 scoring and 4.9 rebounding averages while dishing out a team high 81 assists and recording a team best 38 steals. He is shooting 49.5% from the field, 32.6% from three’s, and 72.2% from the charity stripe.
In the latest CCAA statistics report that was released last evening, Hoskins is in the top 20 in six categories. He is leading the conference in assists and steals while he is fifth in scoring, seventh in assist/turnover ratio, 13th in field goal percentage, and 20th in rebounding.
Hoskins also was player of the week for the week of Nov. 16-22 and Dec. 28-Jan. 3.
The Gators will commence a four-game road trip this Friday, January 29 in Turlock for a 7:30pm scheduled conference game with Cal State Stanislaus. Then this Saturday, January 30, SF State will travel to Chico State for a 7:30pm scheduled conference game with Chico State.
