WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – San Francisco State outside hitter
Beth Perkins (Woodland, Calif., Woodland Christian HS, Mt. Hood CC) has been named the Molten/California Collegiate Athletic Association Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 14-20, the league office announced Monday.
The weekly award is the first for the Gator senior, who played a key role in helping SF State to a 3-0 record against conference foes last week, including a five-set victory over previously undefeated and No. 13 Sonoma State. The three wins kept the Gators tied for second place in the CCAA, one game behind conference-leader Cal State San Bernardino.
In 14 sets, Perkins totaled 60 kills (3.67 per set) and 25 digs while hitting at a .269 clip. During a five-set triumph at Cal State Monterey Bay on Sept. 15, she tallied season-highs of 23 kills and a .375 attack percentage while adding 11 digs en route to her seventh double-double of the year. Perkins followed that performance with a team-best 21 kills and .295 attack percentage against Sonoma State on Sept. 18, adding six digs, a block solo and a block assist, as SF State snapped the Seawolves’ season-opening 11-match winning streak. Against Humboldt State the following evening, she led the squad once again with 16 kills while chipping in eight digs. After the Gators dropped the opening set to the Lumberjacks, Perkins knocked down three consecutive kills early in the second frame, which ignited a key 10-2 run, helping SF State take control of the match.
For the season, Perkins tops the team with 191 kills and a 3.67 average per set, which ranks ninth in the CCAA, and has reached double figures in that category in all 13 contests in 2009.
SF State (11-2, 4-1 CCAA) resumes conference play this weekend with matches at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and Cal State L.A. on Saturday.
